Caring, Ageing & Sensory Loss
Duration: 19 minutes
Synopsis

A practical and insightful program for carers and families.

Colette Mann presents this excellent program about how elderly people cope with sensory loss, often in addition to other health problems. Colette talks to a number of elderly people to provide insight into how these people feel about their sight and hearing impairments.

The program shows simulations of 3 types of late onset sight loss:

  1. Loss of central vision
  2. Peripheral vision loss
  3. Blurring

Simulation of hearing loss is also presented. Additional sensory loss - loss of balance, touch and taste may also be experienced. Tips for carers are offered to help understand the specific impact of an individual's sensory loss:

  • Observe behaviour - eg needing more light to read, becoming withdrawn, often asking for words to be repeated, having TV too loud, sitting too close to TV
  • Ask questions - eg do you need more light? What can you see? Can you hear clearly?
Principles of Explanation, Orientation and Reinforcement are emphasized. The clock face technique for food identification and Sighted Guide Techniques are also covered.

Sighted Guide Techniques are also covered.
